David Borchelt, Ph.D., an expert in the scientific understanding of neurodegenerative diseases, has been awarded the 2019 Basic Science Award from the University of Florida College of Medicine.

The award was presented during the Spring Faculty Appreciation Reception on Wednesday, April 10 at the Harrell Medical Education Building.

Dr. Borchelt, a professor of neuroscience who currently directs UF’s Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease, studies the basic molecular events that underlie neurodegenerative diseases, using models to understand how mutations in specific genes causes diseases such as Alzheimer’s and ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
