Malú Tansey, Ph.D., director of UF’s Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease, was among a select group of experts to present during a press conference at the Society for Neuroscience’s annual conference in Chicago on Monday, Oct. 21.

Participants explained their research on gut-brain communication via the immune system that may help in the development of novel treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

Tansey’s research examined a possible link between diets rich in fat and sugar and chronic inflammation. The research strengthened findings that this combination could possibly lead to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

“Understanding the link between obesity and Alzheimer’s disease is more relevant now than ever,” Tansey said.
