Two University of Florida faculty members have earned leadership positions with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), an organization dedicated to establishing and maintaining standards of excellence for psychiatrists and neurologists.
Michael S. Jaffee, M.D., chair of neurology, was named a director of neurology, and Josepha Cheong, M.D., a professor of psychiatry, was elected as 2025’s ABPN board chair after serving two four-year terms as a director of psychiatry. Jaffee and Cheong, who are both MBI investigators, began their new roles on Jan. 1.
Established in 1935, the ABPN promotes excellence through its certification processes designed to identify qualified specialists through rigorous credential and training requirements and board examinations. Over the years, the ABPN has expanded certification to 15 psychiatry- and neurology-related subspecialties.
The ABPN Board of Directors includes an elected board chair (serving one year), along with eight directors representing psychiatry and eight representing neurology, who each serve four-year terms.
“The University of Florida College of Medicine takes immense pride in the leadership roles Dr. Michael Jaffee and Dr. Josepha Cheong have earned with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology,” said Jennifer Hunt, M.D., M.Ed, interim dean of UF’s College of Medicine. “Their appointments reflect not only their exceptional expertise in neurology and psychiatry but also their dedication to advancing standards of excellence in these critical fields. These prestigious roles are a testament to their impact as educators, researchers, and clinicians, as well as to the excellence fostered within our UF community.”
